Mochos village Verified

Mochos village is just 12 km above Stalida in the Municipality of Chersonissos. The village has preserved its traditional color and nature is predominant as it is surrounded by olives, vineyards and fruit trees. Visitors can walk in the scenic and narrow streets of the village where they will see the stone-built houses of Cretan architecture and the well-preserved historic churches and then rest in the main square of the village.

In the center of the village, which is the reference point of it, there is a large, paved and tree-lined square in which the majestic temple of the Annunciation - St. Paraskevi dominates. In the square, there are old traditional cafes and taverns where visitors can taste the Cretan dishes under the shade of trees, meet and chat with the hospitable inhabitants of the area.

Mochos village is also famous for its Cretan musical tradition. In the alleys of the village, the visitor has the opportunity to listen to songs quite often. Every Wednesday, during the summer season, the dance group of the Cultural Association of Mochos “I PROODOS” in cooperation with the experienced musicians present a music and dance program with Cretan and traditional Greek (Laika) music, in the beautiful village square. Tourists from the surrounding areas of Stalida, Malia and Chersonissos visit Mochos in order to have fun in those feasts which last until morning. The shops in the square offer their services by serving food and plenty of wine, while dancers with traditional costumes teach tourists how to dance.

Every year, on 14th and 15th of August, a celebration for the Assumption of Virgin Mary takes place in the village square. It is a celebration with Cretan dances and Cretan musicians. Simultaneously, an exhibition of hand-woven, samplers and knitwear takes place in the Folklore Museum of Mochos.

Among the famous people who have visited Mochos village was the former Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, who particularly loved the village and became an honorary citizen of it.

In the wider area of Mochos, there are about 10 churches. The Monastery of Panagia Theogennitoros is worth visiting and is located north of the village and outside the settlement.

The village of Mochos preserves the authentic Cretan character with the hospitality of its inhabitants, its simplicity and its tradition. In addition, the climate, location and surroundings make it an ideal destination and first choice of many visitors.

From Mochos village, the visitor can go to the Lasithi Plateau passing through the villages of Potamies, Avdou and Krasi.
