Events in Chersonissos Municipality

Entrance to the archaeological sites, monuments and museums belonging to the State is free, on the first Sunday of each month from 1 November to 31 March.

On Sunday 18th of March in 2018, at the Primiry School of Episkopi, at 11:30 am, the educational action for driving behavior of children “Talos is driving, cycling and walking” will be held.

“SOS Trafficking Crimes”, in association with the “Cycling Detachment of Pieria” and the Volunteer Education Team of the Municipality of Heraklion in response to the call of the Cultural Association of Episkopi, organize this experiential action of Traffic Education.

The entrance is free. In Greek without translation.

The Chefs Club of Crete, with the support of the Region of Crete and the Chamber of Heraklion, organizes the 10th Cretan Contest of Cooking, Confectionery and Artistic Creation of the Mediterranean.

The competition will take place on 23, 24 and 25 March 2018 at the International Exhibition Center of Crete, Gournes, Chersonissos Municipality. Starts daily at 10:00 am and the space will be open until late afternoon with entrance free to all.

This competition is based on Cretan, Greek and Mediterranean cooking and is organized every two years. It is a wider cultural event, with the participation of professional cooks and students of cooking schools, while parallel events include presentations, speeches and other events that make it interesting to watch them from the public.

There will also be a number of producers of local products, food companies, gastronomy, catering and tourism. Housewives and cultural clubs will also take part.

On 25th of March, the War of Independence in 1821 against the Turkish yoke after 400 years of slavery is celebrated. Specifically, it was the armed rebellion of the Greeks against the Ottomans in order to establish an independent nation, the Greek nation.

Apart from the national character of this historical celebration, the celebration of 25th of March is also a religious one. On 25th of March, the Annunciation is also celebrated and is one of the greatest celebrations of Christianity. The day of the Annunciation was the day when Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would become the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

The Municipality of Chersonissos celebrates this national holiday with dignity every year. Specifically, in order to celebrate the National Holiday, the following events take place:
Greek flag-raising at the City Hall, the municipal and public buildings in all municipal units of the Municipality of Chersonissos as well as at schools.
Divine Liturgy takes place in all the Holy Temples of the Municipality of Chersonissos .
In particular, at the headquarters of the Municipality of Chersonissos in Gournes, there is a doxology in the Holy Church of the Annunciation.

Wreaths are placed at Monuments in Chersonissos Harbor, at Municipality of Chersonissos’ headquarters in Gournes, in Analipsi, in Chersonissos, in Malia, in Episkopi and in Mochos.

In addition, school flag parades are being carried out by the children and pupils of the schools of the Municipality of Chersonissos at the headquarters of the Municipality of Chersonissos in Gournes, in front of the City Hall, on the main street of El. Venizelos at Chersonissos Port, on the main street of El. Venizelos in Malia and in Episkopi, from the Primary School to Monument.

Members of the “Estia”, the Women of Malia Association, exhibit their paintings, from Friday, March 30th to Sunday, April 1, at the Female School in Malia.

The painting exhibition will be open from 10am to 2am and from 6pm to 10pm with free admission to the public.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Friday at 19:00.

The Choιr of Malia will sing the carols of Lazarus on Saturday 31 March 2018 at 11:00 starting from the former Town Hall of Malia. The children will collect eggs from citizens and will be painted red on Maundy Thursday by members of the Cultural Association of Malia.

The Cultural Association in Avdou village will sing the Lazarus’ carols in the village streets on Saturday 31 March 2018 at 15:00. The event will start from the square of the village.

The Cultural Association “Agia Triada” in Agriana village will sing the Lazarus’ carols in the village streets on Saturday 31 March 2018 at 16:00. The event will start from the Cultural Center in Agriana.

The Athletic Club of Crete will host in Crete the first match of the Panhellenic Rally Asphalt Championship of 2018, announced by the Federation of Motor Sport of Greece, OMAE. The race will be held on the weekend of March 31 and April 1, 2018 and is designed with the safety and pleasure of contestants and spectators.
