Hersonissos is a town and a municipality in the north of Crete, bordering the Mediterranean / Aegean Sea. This community is about 25 kilometers east of Heraklion and west of Agios Nikolaos. What is usually called Hersonissos is in fact its peninsula and harbour. It is part of the Heraklion regional unit. It is situated 25 km from the Heraklion airport and 27 km from the Heraklion port. The seat of the municipality is the village Gournes.
The municipality was formed at the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the following 4 former municipalities, that became municipal units: Episkopi, Gouves, Hersonissos, Malia. It has an area of 272.167 km2 (105.084 sq mi), the municipal unit 70.984 km2 (27.407 sq mi).
It is a must visiting the villages Piskopiano, Koutouloufari, Ano Hersonissos, Avdou, Gonies and Potamies, which are small traditional villages close to the sea resorts. Further up on the mountains but still not very far away, there are Krasi and Kera on the road to Lassithi Plateau.
